Why Roblox accounts get stolen
Most stolen game accounts are not "hacked" in a movie-style way. Someone is tricked into handing over their own password. The trick usually looks harmless: a chat message, a video description or a website that promises something exciting. Kids and teens are targeted because they play often, trade items and want to be helpful or lucky.
If you are a parent or carer, you do not need to be a tech expert. You need to know what the traps look like and spend ten minutes on the right settings. This guide is written for teens and parents to go through together.
Common tricks to recognise
- "Free Robux" generators. Any site or video that asks you to type your username and password to get free currency is a trap. Roblox currency is only obtained through official channels.
- Fake "moderator" or "support" messages. A chat saying "your account will be banned unless you verify here" is pressure, not support. Pressure and a deadline are classic warning signs.
- Fake trade or game links. Someone offers a rare item or a "secret game" and sends a link. The page looks like the Roblox login screen but is a copy designed to capture what you type.
- Friends who suddenly act strangely. A hijacked account can message its friends list. If a friend sends an odd link, ask them on another channel (in person, or by phone) before clicking.
- Requests to share a code. If anyone asks for a verification code sent to your email or phone, never give it out. That code is the last lock on your door.
The golden rules
- Never type your password anywhere you reached through a link in chat. Open the official app or type the address yourself.
- Use a password that is unique to Roblox. Reusing one across games and social media means one leak opens every door.
- Check the web address carefully before logging in. Misspellings and extra words are red flags.
- Talk early. A child who admits "I clicked something weird" within minutes can often save the account. A child who fears punishment may hide it for days.
The same habits apply to Minecraft (via its Microsoft account), social platforms and any other login. Settings differ slightly between apps, and menus can change after updates, so if something looks different, look for the Security or Privacy section.
Steps
- Open Settings. Log in to the official Roblox app or website, then open the Settings menu (the gear icon on the website, or the "More" menu in the app).
- Add and verify an email address. Under Account Info, make sure the email is one you or your parent can access and that it is verified. This is needed to recover the account if something goes wrong.
- Change the password. Choose a long, unique password, ideally three or four random words plus numbers or symbols. A password manager can help the family store it safely.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. Go to the Security section and enable 2-Step Verification. An authenticator app is generally stronger than email codes. Even if a thief gets the password, they still cannot get in.
- Set an Account PIN. In Security, create a PIN that protects the settings from being changed. Do not share it with friends.
- Review where you are logged in. In Security, look for the list of logged-in sessions or devices and sign out any you do not recognise. Use the option to sign out of other sessions after changing the password.
- Check privacy and chat settings. In Privacy, limit who can message the account and who can invite it to private servers. Younger teens are safer with stricter options, such as friends only.
- Set up parental controls. Parents can link their own account to the child's under Parental Controls, then manage settings with a Parent PIN. Choose a PIN that the child cannot guess.
- Practise spotting a fake. Together, look at a suspicious message and ask: Does it want a password or a code? Is there a deadline? Is the link strange? If yes, do not click. Report it in the app and block the sender.
- Know the recovery plan. If an account is taken over, change the password from a trusted device straight away, sign out of all sessions, check the email address has not been swapped, and contact official Roblox Support through its website.
